The Project
The ultimate aim is to bring as many public cycle sharing schemes to cities worldwide as possible. For the moment, however, we are principally focused on locations within the UK.
We are drawing on the lessons learnt from existing schemes with a view to initiating the most successful and efficient public cycle sharing schemes possible.
The aim of this project is to encourage and affect a shift in urban mobility in as many locations as possible worldwide; moving away from existing pollutant modes of transport towards increased use of more sustainable, non-pollutant, environmentally friendly modes of transport.
Whilst the positive environmental impacts of any such scheme are at the heart of the EIO's mandate, there are many other benefits to public bike sharing schemes which must not be forgotten. Public cycle schemes can lead to greater urban mobility for inhabitants; reduced stress on the public transport network as well as road traffic; more enjoyable journeys which are often faster than their PT of car equivalent; improved community spirit and better general well-being for the population to name but a few...
Envirobike for Universities
As part of the first phase for city wide implementation Envirobike is offering Universities across the country the opportunity to be among the first to implement “micro-schemes” on their campuses.
Envirobike for universities will provide students with a sustainable, healthy and cheap means of transport for commuting to and from lectures, halls of residence as well as into town.
The scheme would work on exactly the same principles as a city wide scheme with “bike stops” located at regular intervals across university campuses and other university property, such as halls of residence.
An Envirobike scheme can be tailored to the specific needs of each university. Depending on what was decided upon, it would be possible, for example, to make the scheme completely free once an initial subscription had been payed.
If you would like to arrange a meeting with the Envirobike team to discuss potential implementation in more detail please contact either sam.gill@envirobike.org or oliver.roitt@envirobike.org.
